Elgin mom charged with breaking infant son’s leg
An Elgin woman could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on charges she broke her infant son’s leg.
The most serious charge against Deyonna Phillips, 20, of the 100 block of South State Street, is aggravated battery of a child. She was arrested Wednesday night on allegations she struck her 4-month-old son with her knee, causing a fracture to his left leg.
According to bond court documents, the woman inflicted the injury on March 5.
The child was transferred to Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago from Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin because of the then-unexplained fracture to his leg, according to Elgin police. Doctors later determined the injury was consistent with an inflicted injury, Elgin police said.
Phillips appeared in bond court Thursday where bail was set at $500,000. Phillips must pay 10 percent of that to be released before her next court date, set for 9 a.m. March 16 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles.
