Batavia house catches fire twice in 24 hours

A Batavia firefighter was sent to the hospital early Sunday after the fire department responded to a second fire in a 24-hour period at a home on Lake Street.

The first fire around 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the home on the 200 block of Lake Street was caused by an electrical malfunction. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.

The department received a call to a second fire at 6:19 a.m. Sunday. The first unit was on the scene at 6:21 a.m. and found fire coming from the second floor.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the fire had extended into the attic.

The fire in the attic was put out after the entire second floor ceiling and insulation was removed. Several windows were also removed.

Firefighters said the fire was under control at 7 a.m.

One firefighter was injured. He was treated at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva and released.

The second fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $170,000.

Automatic aid was received from the North Aurora, Geneva, Fermilab and St. Charles Fire departments.
