Palatine Dist. 5: Wagner

Palatine’s election scene is fairly quiet with only District 5 contested between incumbent Jack Wagner and newcomer Kollin Kozlowski.

Kozlowski, 39, who works as a risk management manager and has served on several youth sports boards, says it’s in his heart to serve. He and Councilman Wagner, a 24-year board veteran, differ over the council’s recent approach to finances. Kozlowski believes the council should have trimmed more or used its $18 million in reserves to plug the budget.

Wagner, 66, a chemical firm executive, said $20 million in cuts and layoffs came from several lengthy public workshops. He says a $40-per-household tax increase was needed to cover pension obligations. Wagner wants a seventh term, in part, to see a new police headquarters to completion. Kozlowski has a bright future, but Wagner offers valuable experience in tough times. Wagner is endorsed.
