Quilt artist focus at Elgin museum

In conjunction with the temporary exhibit “Abstract to Utilitarian — African American Art in Elgin,” the Elgin Public Museum is hosting a program featuring quilt artist Ina Dews Friday, March 11.

The art of quilting has a long history. Dews will discuss the many different methods of quilting, including Gee Bend style. This program will feature additional works not on display in the exhibit — discover the inspiration and stories behind these amazing quilts.

Dews has been quilting since she was a little girl, before moving to the Elgin area in 1964. She estimates she has 40 to 45 quilts on hand that she created.

Working in circles and squares, she constructs masterpieces from those basic forms. Several years ago, Dews went to Rwanda, where she met, worked with and shared her talents and skills with local women.

In addition to Ina's quilt work, “Abstract to Utilitarian — African American Art in Elgin” also features the abstract art of Ivan Mayo and the avant-garde art of Freddrick Wimms. Check out the artwork before or after the program. This exhibit will run through March.

“Utilitarian Artwork: The Quilts of Ina Dews” begins at 7 p.m. Cost for the presentation is $6 per person, $4 for museum members. It is in Lords Park, 225 Grand Blvd. in Elgin.

Seating is limited, so reserve a spot by contacting the museum at (847) 741-6655 or epm@cityofelgin.org, or visiting elginpublicmuseum.org.
