Quinn asks for federal disaster declaration

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Pat Quinn is asking that 60 Illinois counties be declared federal disaster areas due to February's blizzard.

The governor sent a formal request to President Barack Obama on Monday.

Quinn's office says state and local governments spent an estimated $64 million to respond to the storm and recover afterward.

Quinn says the snow is mostly gone but the financial impact lingers. He says he's asking Obama to help communities hit hard by the storm recover their expenses.

If the federal disaster request is approved, local governments could be reimbursed for 75 percent of their eligible storm-related expenses.
