Indian Trails Library launches new book club for kids

If you give kids a good book, they will read and enjoy it.

That’s the idea behind the Indian Trails Public Library Bookworms — a book cub especially designed for fourth- and fifth-graders.

Each attendee receives a free copy of the monthly book selection when they register for the event at the Kids Desk in The Indian Trails Public Library. The Book Club will meet monthly. The books are supplied, at no charge, by the Children’s Advocates, an affiliate organization of the Indian Trails Public Library.

The first Bookworms’ Book Club meets at 4 p.m. Monday, March 7, at the library.

According to Lori Luecht, Indian Trails Public Library children’s programmer, reading the book is just half the fun of this club. At each meeting, the kids get a chance to meet with their friends, talk about the book selection of the month, make a craft relating to the book, and get a snack.

The book for March is “The Cricket in Times Square” by George Selden. The book tells the story of Chester, a cricket from Connecticut, who gets stuck on a train headed for New York City. After stumbling around on the subway, he finally ends up in Times Square. Chester the cricket is found by Mario Bellini, who wants to keep Chester as a good-luck pet.

Chester befriends Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat. From there he learns his way around Times Square, makes new friends, has lots of adventures in the “Big City,” and eventually becomes rich and famous before returning to Connecticut.

The April Book Club selection is “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry. This book tells about 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her life in Denmark in 1943. It highlights the efforts of the Danish people to fight the Nazi soldiers and help save the Jews living in their country. The April Bookworms — Book Club will be held 4 p.m. Monday, April 4.

Registration for each of the Bookworm’s — A Book Club for Kids is required and can be done at the Kids Desk of the Indian Trail Public Library. Each book club member can pick up a copy of the book selection of the month ahead of time so that there will enough time to read the book before the program. To register or get more information call the library at (847) 459-4100.
