Injured deputy sued juvenile treatment home

MADISON, Wis. — A Dane County sheriff's deputy injured while trying to stop a stolen car is suing a juvenile treatment home, saying staff should have done more to prevent a 15-year-old from stealing the vehicle.

Dale Veto suffered broken legs and a broken and separated shoulder in 2008 when he was struck by the stolen car while laying a spike strip on a highway near Sun Prairie to stop the vehicle.

Veto and his family are suing Lutheran Social Services, operators of the Serenity House in Stoughton where the 15-year-old was staying. Veto says staff should have locked an office where the keys to the car were kept, and should have noticed much sooner that it was stolen.

The State Journal reports Lutheran Social Services says it will fully cooperate with the legal process.
