Chicago police warn public about grenades

Chicago authorities say the discovery of two hand grenades within two days on the city's South Side has prompted new warnings about the explosive devices.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Robert Perez tells the (Tinley Park) SouthtownStar that the public should know that grenades are both hazardous and illegal.

An employee at a Waste Management facility noticed a grenade on a waste conveyor belt Thursday morning and called police. The facility was evacuated for about two hours while the police Bomb and Arson Unit investigated. Perez says the grenade still had some charge, so it was taken for disposal.

A day earlier, a couple discovered a cache of ammunition and weapons, including a grenade, inside a box they had purchased at an auction. That grenade was found to be inert.
