Aurora man admits home invasion

An Aurora man faces 14½ years in prison for admitting his role in a home invasion in 2008.

Chavis T. Meeks, 25, of the 1100 block of Douglas Avenue, pleaded guilty Thursday to one felony count of home invasion for an Oct. 20, 2008, burglary on the 700 block of North May Street in Aurora.

Meeks is the second suspect to be convicted in the burglary. Jarvas S. Gordon, 23, of the 100 block of North Kendall Street in Aurora, was convicted in March 2009 on one count of armed violence, one count of residential burglary, and two counts of attempted armed robbery — all felonies.

Kane County prosecutors said Meeks and Gordon entered the house through an unlocked door while the homeowner ran to her bedroom to call 911. As she tried to shut the bedroom door, the men pushed against it and one of them inserted a 9 mm handgun through the opening, officials said.

The men left when they realized the victim was in contact with police. They fled in a vehicle before being stopped by an Aurora police officer. The victim later identified the suspects by their clothing, authorities said.

Meeks was given “day-for-day” sentencing after having served 856 days in Kane County jail. He he has been held there since his arrest.

Gordon was sentenced to 15 years in prison in July 2009.
