Alorton police chief pleads guilty to tax fraud
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — A police chief from St. Clair County has pleaded guilty to filing a false income tax return.
Alorton Police Chief Robert Cummings entered the plea Thursday in U.S. District Court.
The 42-year-old Cummings admitted that from 1999 to 2006 he filed fraudulent U.S. income tax returns by using an inapplicable filing status and claiming false dependents, deductions, credits and expenses.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that according to his plea agreement, Cummings claimed a minor child that he knew was no relation to him and falsely claimed he paid day care expenses for that child.
Besides his post in Alorton, Cummings also has served as a part-time police officer for the Brooklyn Police Department for about two years.
