The skinny: Life was so much more simple and fun for Illinois when it traveled to Iowa on Dec. 29 for both teams’ Big Ten opener. Demetri McCamey piled up 20 points and 10 assists — a performance he hasn’t matched since. D.J. Richardson and Bill Cole each drilled four 3-pointers in the first half — performances they haven’t matched since. Richardson finished with 17 points and Cole had 14 points — performances they haven’t matched since. The Illini shot 67 percent for the night, boosted by a 7-for-7 showing on 3-pointers in the opening 7:05. With Illinois now stuck in sixth place in the Big Ten, coach Bruce Weber wishes his guys would cut loose and play relaxed like they did at Iowa City. It’s easier said than done at this late stage of the year … when a loss would be the worst blow yet to Illinois’ NCAA Tournament plans.
