Naperville North counselor posts bond on sex charges
The Naperville North High School counselor accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student was released on bond Wednesday.
John Carbonaro, 33, surrendered to authorities in the morning and was released after posting $20,000 of a $200,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 23.
Carbonaro, of the 3S600 block of Melcher Avenue in Warrenville, has been charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Prosecutors allege he became involved in an improper relationship with the student.
On more than one occasion last summer, Carbonaro sexually abused his victim at his home, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin’s office. Last Friday, a third party told school officials about the relationship between Carbonaro and the student, prosecutors said.
“If these allegations are proven true, Mr. Carbonaro used his position of trust and authority as a member of the school faculty to sexually abuse his young victim,” Berlin said. “He allegedly betrayed the trust placed in him by the school, the victim’s parents and the victim to satisfy his own desires.”
Berlin commended school officials for reporting the matter in a timely fashion.
Carbonaro, who is on paid administrative leave from his school position, also has been suspended without pay from his part-time job at the Naperville Park District.
Parks officials disclosed Wednesday that Carbonaro was a coach for a summer camp program at Naperville North from 2006 to 2009, and has been employed as a range officer at Sportsman’s Park since December.
