1 man killed, 2 Chicago police officers wounded

Authorities say an aggressive panhandler was killed and two police officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire in Chicago's River North neighborhood.

Authorities say the panhandler was pronounced dead late Wednesday afternoon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The two officers were taken to Northwestern, but their injuries were not life-threatening. The Chicago Police Department says one officer suffered a gunshot wound to the back, while the other sustained a hand injury from flying glass.

The department says the officers had arrested the panhandler after complaints that he had allegedly been disturbing pedestrians. The Chicago Police Department News Affairs office says the panhandler was handcuffed and in the rear seat of the unmarked police car when he pulled a handgun from under layers of clothing and began firing.
