Many questions surround deer kill
Contrary to recent reports, one deer, not two, infected with Chronic Wasting Disease was killed near Binnie Woods by a bow hunter. The other was shot near Burlington. Was that bow hunting legally authorized, and by whom? What prompted testing for infection? Were results publicized?
The disease is noncommunicable to humans. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Dundee Township plan to massacre large groups of deer later this week for testing because a sick animal may infect others.
The number of healthy deer destined to suffer and be sacrificed for the testing seems excessive. Many does are pregnant now.
Sharpshooters near residential areas pose risks. Notification may bypass some people, kids and pets. The shooter will aim “down” and “into vegetation,” but accidents happen.
Will more than one agency assess the testing results? How soon can findings be made available for public evaluation before more deer are taken?
Many distressed people question the size, scope and safety of this bloody kill. Culling is not a cure for the disease. It will not fully prevent its spread, which the IDNR states as its objective.
I ask the Kane County Forest Preserve not to authorize an unjustified increase in the number of animals to be shot dead. I urge those with concerns to closely monitor these disturbing activities and to make inquiries regarding this imminent slaughter.
