Fallen Plainfield soldier honored

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois House Tuesday honored Army Pfc. Andrew Meari, of Plainfield, who was killed in Afghanistan in November.

Meari’s parents were in attendance and lawmakers on the House floor talked about Meari’s life and career in the military.

House Republican Leader Tom Cross described Meari as someone who provided comfort to others, whether in military situations or not.

“That, to me, is a sign of an incredible leader,” Cross said.

Meari was killed by an insurgent armed with an explosive device. It was his first tour in Afghanistan.

Lawmakers approved a resolution honoring Meari.

“Andrew Meari dedicated his life to defending America’s freedom and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his nation,” the resolution reads in part.

Meari was based out of Fort Campbell, Ky., assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
