Flood, winter weather advisories in effect

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the Des Plaines and Fox rivers after an inch or more of rain fell in some areas Sunday with more precipitation expected overnight.

A winter weather advisory is also in effect for portions of Lake, McHenry, Winnebago and Boone counties until 9 a.m. Monday as forecasts call for rain, which may turn to freezing rain before transforming to snow by Monday morning.

Although significant ice accumulation is not anticipated, the weather service is urging drivers to use caution as some ice may lead to slippery roads.

The flood advisory for the Des Plaines River is set to expire 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, but forecasts expect the river to rise past the action stage, where water will begin to overflow banks in the lowest areas adjacent to the river.

The flood advisory for the Fox River is in effect until Thursday afternoon, and the river is expected to rise to the point of overflow in some areas by early Tuesday morning.

The weather service is advising drivers who encounter a flooded roadway to turn around and find an alternate route.
