Immaculate Conception wins playoff opener

Playing its starters only for the first eight to nine minutes, Immaculate Conception beat overmatched Chicago Talent Development 50-17 on Monday in a Class 2A Immaculate Conception regional quarterfinal in Elmhurst.

No. 3 seed IC (12-15) led 10-2 after a quarter, and 35-6 at halftime. Dan Ribando and Demetrius Mobley each scored 8 points and center Pat Burke added 7 for the Knights. No. 6 seed Talent Development (7-18) fielded just six players and was led by Dontrell James with 7 points.

Also at Immaculate Conception, No. 4 seed Walther Lutheran (11-16) used pressure defense and 26 points by Tyreese Russell to pound No. 5 Douglass, 95-50.

Walther advances to a 6 p.m. Wednesday regional semifinal against top-seeded Providence-St. Mel; Immaculate Conception will face No. 2 seed Timothy Christian at 8:10 p.m. The Knights beat Timothy 61-52 in their fifth game of the season, on Nov. 30.
