Fire signs another Uruguayan forward

There’s something about those Uruguayan forwards that the Fire likes.

The Fire announced Friday it has signed a second player with roots at the Montevideo Wanderers. Diego Chaves, a 5-foot-10 striker, will rejoin Gaston Puerari, signed earlier this month by the Fire.

Chaves will meet up with the Fire for preseason training in Florida as soon as he receives his International Transfer Certificate.

“Diego is a dynamic forward who can score goals and create offensively,” said Fire technical director Frank Klopas in a team statement. “His size, ability and strike rate in Uruguay should assist in his transition to MLS. Diego will join the group in Florida and begin to prepare with the team for the upcoming season.”

The 25-year-old Chaves has 27 goals in 93 appearances for Wanderers from 2004 to 2009. He played most recently with Nacional in Uruguay, helping it to second place in the Uruguayan Apertura tournament.
