Why do they burn?

Prescribed burns used by ecologists to remove invasive species in early spring and late fall will be the subject of the Lake County Audubon Society’s meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 7 at the Libertyville village hall, 118 W. Cook Ave. Leslie Berns, land management ecologist of the Lake County Forest Preserve District will discuss the reasons, uses and techniques of controlled burns, as well as safeguards to keep them under control. Berns also will discuss how the burns, which have been used for 10 years, have improve the ecology. The 90-minute program is free and open to the public. Call (847) 362-5134.
