Weather records may fall today
A 131-year-old Chicago weather record could fall to the wayside by the time night falls today, meteorologists predict.
Meteorologists from the National Weather Service said the chance of reaching — or even surpassing — the 60 degree mark today is good.
Weather predictors believe we will officially tie the record with high temperatures expected to be 60 degrees.
The record for the highest temperature ever recorded on Feb. 17 is 60 degrees, which was established in 1880.
In order to break the weather mark, it would have to reach 60 degrees at O’Hare International Airport, the weather service’s official reporting station.
The temperature at O’Hare was 50 early Thursday.
After this warm spell moves out, the area will fall back to more normal temperatures, meteorologists predict.
They said it’s expected to drop back to the mid-40s Friday, then low-40s through the weekend. It’ll be back to the freezing mark next week.
Snow is also expected to start back up on Monday or Tuesday next week. At this point, the amount of precipitation expected is unclear.
