Right-handers Randy Wells and Carlos Silva appear to have the inside track on the fourth and fifth spots in the Cubs’ rotation. Here is a look at each pitcher:

Silva

2010 record: 10-6, 4.22 ERA

High point: 8-0 start with a 2.93 ERA and all-star consideration

Low point: Heart ailment suffered during an Aug. 1 start at Colorado and season-ending elbow tendinitis.

Strengths: Good sinker and control, tough competitor

Knocks against him: Too heavy

Wells

2010 record: 8-14, 4.26 ERA

High point: Career-best 32 starts; 3 straight starts of at least 7 innings to end season

Low point: Pair of May starts in which he lasted a combined 2 innings, giving up 12 runs (11 earned)

Strengths: Sinker and slider, tough competitor

Knocks against him: Loses concentration
