Collapse of wall causes gas leak in Lombard

Lombard authorities closed a stretch of Westmore-Meyers Road on Sunday when a collapsed wall caused a gas-line break in a state unemployment office.

The gas leak was contained shortly after 11:30 a.m. Sunday, and no injuries were reported.

Police on the scene Sunday said a buildup of snow caused a wall to collapse in the back of the Illinois Employment and Training Center, located in a strip shopping center at 837 Westmore-Meyers Road. The collapsed wall cut a gas line, creating a leak.

Crews from gas utility Nicor Inc. were called at 10:12 a.m., said Nicor spokesman Richard Caragol. They shut off the gas completely by 11:32 a.m., he said.

Emergency workers closed a stretch of road and taped off a large section of the shopping center parking lot while workers ventilated the building and went to work on the gas leak.
