Tollway runs special patrols during deep freeze
An arctic air mass has settled over the region, bring subzero temperatures and bitter winds that have produced dangerous conditions capable of causing frostbite to skin exposed for 30 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.
The Illinois Tollway has activated its “Zero Weather Patrols” to provide hourly patrols keeping an eye out for stranded motorists in disabled vehicles. The extra patrols will run Wednesday morning, Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
“With temperatures dipping well below zero tonight and tomorrow night, we want to assure customers that we'll be there to help with a tire change, jump start or call for service,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur.
Stranded motorists should turn on their emergency lights and remain in the vehicles until help arrives, according to Illinois Tollway.
Cell phone users should call *999 for roadway assistance or to report other motorists pulled over on the side of the road.
Before calling, drivers should try to note the nearest milepost marker.
The most common problems reported are vehicles with empty fuel tanks, flat tires, batteries that need a boost or overheated radiators.
The patrols, along with the regular 5 a.m through 8 p.m. weekday Emergency Lane Patrol trucks, helped 950 Tollway customers in December 2010.
Tollway oases also serve as warming centers.
The wind chill advisory will remain in effect until noon Wednesday.
