No need for Des Plaines to give red-light violators a pass

Des Plaines police aren’t worried about any red-light camera infractions that happened during last week’s snowstorms.

Sure, Chicago police announced they weren’t enforcing any red-light camera-related tickets that may have happened during the blizzard, citing the slippery conditions, decreased visibility and mounds of snow that made it tough for drivers.

Why is Des Plaines not worried? Because city cameras didn’t pick up any violations during the storm, said Police Cmdr. Tim Veit.

Cameras picked up one violator about 3:30 p.m. Feb 1 and none more until about 10 a.m. Feb. 2, when the blizzard had passed through the area.

“We’re assuming it was a total whiteout, and the cameras didn’t pick anything up,” Veit said.

Des Plaines has cameras on Golf Road and Rand Road.
