Kitchen fire leaves Grayslake condo uninhabitable

A kitchen fire inside a Grayslake condominium left the unit uninhabitable Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

A smoke alarm followed by a 911 call from the residents alerted fire fighters to the condominium on the 1900 block of Country Drive in Grayslake just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, said Battalion Chief Jim Weiman.

Two people were inside the unit at the time, but both are OK, Weiman said.

The fire was contained to the kitchen of the unit, but the rest of the residence was damaged by smoke, officials said.

The Red Cross was called in to help the occupants find somewhere to stay, Weiman said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but could have been due to food cooking on the stove at the time, Weiman said.

In total, the fire caused approximately $4,000 in damage.
