Geneva mayor fined for crash

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns was found guilty this week of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident Dec. 11.

Burns was fined $175 and received 6 months of supervision.

Burns, 46, had pleaded “not guilty” Jan. 4 to the charges. He was out of town on a business trip Tuesday and was represented in court by his attorney, Douglas Cuscaden. Cuscaden is also Burns’ brother-in-law.

Burns wrecked his 2008 Nissan Altima when he rear-ended a Dodge Grand Caravan on State Street, pushing the Grand Caravan into the back of another Grand Caravan that was stopped for a red light at Anderson Boulevard. He told police at the time he didn’t know what caused the crash and couldn’t remember what happened right before the crash.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. on eastbound State, and it was raining.

Burns was taken to Delnor Hospital with minor injuries. The drivers of the other vehicles refused medical attention. There were no passengers.
