Scouting: Northwestern @ Michigan

Northwestern (14-8, 4-7) at Michigan (14-10, 4-7)

The skinny: Northwestern comes in on a roll after edging Illinois and nearly knocking off top-ranked Ohio State. Moreover, the Wildcats handled the Wolverines with ease on Jan. 18 as John Shurna scored 22 first-half points in a 74-60 romp. Unfortunately for NU, Michigan might be the Big Ten’s most improved team over the last three weeks. John Beilein’s group ripped off wins at Michigan State and Penn State and pushed Ohio State during the trip to Columbus. This one could be as simple as Northwestern’s ability to hit 3-pointers. NU canned 10 of 24 3s in the teams’ first meeting, but Michigan has tightened up and allowed teams to shoot just 33 percent (25 of 75) in the last four games. If senior PG Juice Thompson starts for Northwestern — as he has for every game of his career — he’ll break Jitim Young’s school record for career starts with 118.
