City asks residents to clear snow from sidewalks, hydrants

In the wake of last week's blizzard, the city of Naperville encourages residents to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks in order to help maintain the safety of both pedestrians and children walking to school.

Residents are also encouraged to help friends and neighbors whose age or medical conditions make it difficult to shovel snow without risking their health.

According to the Naperville Municipal Code, it is the homeowner's responsibility to clear the snow and ice on any public sidewalk when the snow exceeds two inches in height or ice accumulates.

The city also asks residents to please assist the fire department by clearing snow from fire hydrants when clearing snow from their walkways. During an active fire, vital minutes can be saved by firefighters having a clear path to a fire hydrant.

Please clear the ice and snow from around the hydrant and shovel a path to the street. Fire fighters need a 4 foot circle around the hydrant to be able to operate it properly.
