Hainesville woman gets four years for drug deals

A Hainesville woman convicted of helping her husband sell cocaine to undercover police officers was sentenced to four years in prison Friday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Scotshilya Lewis, 30, was eligible for a term of up to 15 years when she appeared before Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak.

Assistant State's Attorney Rod Drobinski said Lewis, of the 100 block of Heritage Trail, drove her husband to three meetings with an undercover agent of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group in 2008, and waited nearby for each meeting to be completed.

The meetings were: July 18, when Jeffrey Lewis sold 3.6 grams of cocaine for $120; July 29 when he sold 3.9 grams for $125; and Aug. 8 when he sold 6.9 grams for $235, authorities said.

Jeffrey Lewis was arrested Aug. 14, 2008 after selling 15 grams of cocaine to the agent for $450, a session in which his wife did not participate.

Drobinski said Scotshilya Lewis was taken into custody shortly after her husband's arrest and both were charged with delivery of a controlled substance.

Jeffrey Lewis pleaded guilty Jan. 23, 2009 and was sentenced to seven years in prison, while his wife was convicted on Oct. 19 of last year after a one-day trial.

Defense attorney Robert Ritacca of Waukegan unsuccessfully argued for Potkonjak to sentence his client to the prison boot camp program, citing her lack of prior convictions.
