Jacobs grad Tamburrino earns honor

Jacobs graduate Maria Tamburrino earned some well-deserved accolades recently.

Tamburrino was named the CCAC Division I women’s basketball player of the week. During the award period Tamburrino helped Roosevelt to its first CCAC program win and averaged 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

In a 68-58 victory over Viterbo, Tamburrino netted a career-high 21 points to go with 9 rebounds and 9 steals. She shot 8-for-11 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Tamburrino then scored 20 points and pulled in 9 rebounds in the team’s first conference win an 87-66 triumph over St. Francis. Tamburrino shot 4-for-4 from the 3-point line and was also 4-for-4 from the foul line.

In a recent loss to Purdue-Calumet, Tamburrino scored 12 points on 6 of 12 shooting.

To start the week, Tamburrino was averaging 10.7 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. She is one of four Roosevelt players averaging double digits. Tamburrino was also second on the team in steals (50) and assists (51) to begin the week.

Roosevelt was 12-10 overall and 1-3 in CCAC action to start the week.

Moreno at Luther: Bartlett graduate Eric Moreno is now wrestling at Luther College. Moreno, competing in the 165/174-pound weight divisions, had 7 victories to start the week. Two of those wins came via major decision.

Williams at UT-Arlington: Elgin grad Armani Williams is now a member of the University of Texas at Arlington men’s basketball team. In a recent 83-66 victory over Texas State, Williams had 7 points in 17 minutes of action. In a 62-52 win over Stephen F. Austin, Williams had 5 points in 13 minutes of playing time. On the season, Williams was averaging 5.8 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. In an average of 13.2 minutes of playing time, Williams was shooting .321 from the 3-point line (17-for-53) and .762 from the free-throw line. UT-Arlington was 10-9 and 4-2 in conference play to start the week.

Ross at Rockford: Larkin graduate Josh Ross had a fine season on the gridiron for the Rockford College football team. Ross, a senior at Rockford, was named to the all-Northern Athletics Conference first team. Ross led Rockford with 88 tackles and finished fifth in the conference in that category. He had 41 unassisted tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss. Ross also recorded one quarterback sack and returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.

Moran at Northern Iowa: Jacobs alum Johnny Moran is part of a Northern Iowa University men’s basketball team that had won eight-straight contests to start the week. Moran had 9 points and 5 rebounds and shot 3-for-8 from the 3-point line in a recent 53-51 Missouri Valley Conference victory over Illinois State. Moran had 6 points in a 60-59 MVC victory over Missouri State and had 9 points and 4 rebounds in another league win over Creighton. To start the week, Moran was averaging 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds a game. He had started all 24 of the team’s game this season and was averaging 31 minutes of playing time a contest. Moran was shooting .409 from the field and had connected on 43 of 121 three-point attempts (. 355). He also had 46 assists against only 26 turnovers. He also had 21 steals. Northern Iowa was 18-6 overall and 9-3 in Valley play to start the week.

Yohn at Bradley: St. Edward graduate Katie Yohn has been the leading scorer for the Bradley University women’s basketball team in five of its last eight contests. Yohn had 20 points in an 84-68 loss to Evansville. She also had 18 points in a 73-58 loss to Missouri State. Yohn had 23 points in a 68-64 loss to Drake and had 20 points in a 65-58 win over Evansville. She also had 8 rebounds in that game. Most recently, Yohn had 11 points and a team-high 8 rebounds in a 58-34 loss to Northern Iowa. Yohn has been the team’s leading scorer 9 times this season. To start the week, Yohn was averaging a team-best 13.8 points per game. Yohn had started 15 of the 18 games she had played in (31.3 minutes of playing time per game). Yohn shot 41 of 132 from the 3-point line (. 311) and was shooting .761 from the free-throw line. She was also averaging 4.1 rebounds and had 20 blocks and a team-high 32 steals. Bradley was 10-10 and 3-6 in Missouri Valley Conference action at the start of the week.

Hodge at William & Penn: South Elgin product Adam Hodge is a junior forward on the William & Penn men’s basketball team. In 22 games this season, Hodge is averaging 3.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting .500 from the field. He also had 8 steals to start the week. In an earlier 120-74 win over Faith Baptist Bible, Hodge led the team with 9 rebounds. William & Penn was 11-13 to start the week.

Demrow at Green Bay: Jacobs graduate Shannon Demrow recently helped the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay score a victory over Youngstown State, Illinois State and Illinois Tech. Demrow, a senior at UWGB, won the 200 freestyle (1:54.97) and also helped the 400 free relay team notch a first-place finish with a time of 3:36.41. In an earlier meet against nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Madison, Demrow finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.46. Demrow came into the season holding the school-record in the 200 free. She won the 200 title at the 2009 Horizon League Championships and was also a member of Green Bay’s conference-champion and school-record-setting 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams. She also recorded the second-fasted time in team history in the 500 and 200 butterfly.

Mize at Cardinal Stritch: Crystal Lake South graduate Caitlin Mize is a sophomore center on the Cardinal Stritch women’s basketball team. To start the week, Mize had played in all 24 of the team’s games and was averaging 13.2 minutes of playing time. Mize was averaging 2.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while shooting .676 from the free-throw line. She also had 7 steals. Cardinal Stritch was 18-6 and 6-1 in conference play to start the week.

Whitaker at Washington & Lee: Bartlett graduate Larry Whitaker is now playing for the Washington & Lee University men’s basketball team. Whitaker, to start the week, had played in all of the team’s 18 games and was averaging 6.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest, while shooting .500 from the field and .603 from the free-throw line. Whitaker had 8 points and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes of action in a recent 73-61 win over Emory & Harris. Washington & Lee was 12-6 and 5-5 in conference play at the week’s beginning.
