Storm closes more local events, schools, facilities

The canceling began well before a single snowflake hit the ground and the list has grown as groups, governments and agencies throughout the suburbs are adjusting for the blizzard. Most malls shut down early Tuesday, as did the Hollywood Casino in Aurora.

Here is the latest list:


All secretary of state offices, including driver service facilities, will be closed today. Offices will resume normal hours on Thursday.

Special Olympics Illinois’ State Winter Games set through Thursday in Galena and Dubuque, Iowa, are canceled due to the storm and will not be rescheduled.


Addison School District 4 has canceled all classes for today. St. Philip School has canceled all religious and regular education classes for today. The Addison Park District has canceled all programs and all facilities except Club Fitness for today. The Addison Public Library has canceled its “Make and Take Crafts today. The library will remain closed today.


Waste Management will not pick up garbage or recycling today but may resume Thursday if road conditions allow, pushing back Friday pickups to Saturday.

The Algonquin Township supervisor’s office will be closed today.

Arlington Heights

Refuse collection is being delayed one day since landfills are closed during the storm. Residents north of Oakton will have recycling and refuse collected on Friday; residents south of Oakton will have it collected on Saturday. Groot Industries, (800) 244-1977 or

Arts commission canceled meeting tonight.

Arlington Heights Memorial Library will be closed today. Bookmobile will not be in service.

Northwest Suburban High School District 214 has canceled classes on today.


The Hollywood Casino will be closed all day today.Marmion Academy will be closed Wednesday.

West Aurora District 129 schools are closed Thursday.

Allied Waste pickup will delay its services one day. There will be no collection today and each of the collections will then be pushed back a day.

Fox Valley Park District has canceled all programs through today.

Aurora University has canceled classes at its Aurora, George Williams College and Woodstock Center classes, through 5 p.m. today. A decision on evening classes will be made by midafternoon today.


The Good Shepherd Fitness Center will be closed today.

School has been called off Thursday in Barrington Area Unit District 220.


Batavia schools are closed today.

Garbage pickup has been delayed a day. East-siders will have pickup Friday, and west-siders Saturday. Far west-side pickup is normal on Monday.

All city offices are closed today.

Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., is designated as a public warming center, should you need a warm place to go due to a power outage, a problem with your furnace, or other emergency. The Batavia Library is closed today. All storytimes today are canceled.

Carol Stream

All storytimes at the Carol Stream Library have been canceled today.

There will be no garbage or recycling collection in Carol Stream today. Those who have pick up normally scheduled Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be serviced a day later.

The Carol Stream municipal center at 500 N. Gary Ave. will serve as a 24-hour warming center.


The Dual Language orientation sessions previously set for Feb. 1 and 2 at Liberty Elementary School have been postponed to Feb. 8 and 9. The sessions will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 8, and at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 9. The school is at 6500 Miller Road, just off Randall Road in Carpentersville. Registrations will be taken during the sessions for the 2011-2012 school year.

Village hall will be closed today, and as such, Kane County has canceled all of the court cases that would have been heard. For more information about your case, call Kane County at (630) 232-3413.

Starting today, trash pickups will be delayed by a day, As well, in the event you don#146;t have any heat in your home, the Carpentersville Fire Department reminds residents to call 911 or Quad Com at (847) 428-8784. The department will arrange to bring you to the fire station or village hall, both of which are warming centers.


Garbage pickup is canceled for today. Regular pickup will resume Thursday for residents whose pickup is normally scheduled for Wednesday, Friday for residents whose pickup is normally Thursday, and Saturday for residents whose pickup is normally Friday.

The Cary Area Public Library will be closed today.

There will be no Circle of Friends today. The park board has canceled its meeting today.

DuPage County

The DuPage courthouse will not reopen until Thursday morning.

DuPage High School District 88

DuPage High School District 88 has canceled classes for today. This district includes Addison Trail High School in Addison and Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

East Dundee

Garbage pickup is moving to Thursday.


All schools in Elgin Area School District U-46 will be closed today.

The Grand Victoria Casino remains open, but some of its restaurants will have limited hours.

Elgin Community College will remain closed today. Campus will reopen on Thursday. All classes and events are canceled today.

The Goddard School in Elgin will be closed today.

Elgin trash pickup scheduled for today will be delayed until Thursday this week. Trash pickup service will be delayed by one day for all customers for the remainder of the week.

Fox River Grove

Garbage pickup will be delayed and will resume at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5.

The city of Geneva has been informed that Allied Waste will be closed for business today. Refuse pickup will be delayed by one day.

Geneva Middle School South canceled its Stellar Students breakfast, due to happen on Thursday. It will instead be held Feb. 10.

The Geneva school district also rescheduled the fifth annual #147;Educational Resource Fair for Parents of All Students: Beyond the Classroom#148; to Feb. 22.

Grayslake Elementary District 46#146;s schools will be shut Thursday.Grayslake High School District 127#146;s buildings will be closed Thursday.Grayslake Park District#146;s regularly scheduled meeting for 7 p.m. today has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9. The meeting will be at park district headquarters at 240 Commerce Drive.

Hoffman Estates

Groot garbage pickup for the central area of the village, near village hall, will now be collected on Thursday, pushed back from the regularly scheduled Wednesday collection.

Lake Park High School#146;s two campuses has canceled all activities and will be closed today.

The North Daily Fee lot at the Metra station on Irving Park Road will be closed today. Commuters area asked to use the permit lots today and Thursday. No tickets will be issued.


Woodfield Shopping Center: A decision about whether to operate today has not yet been made. Please watch Woodfield#146;s website. The mall said in a release it hoped to reduce traffic surrounding the mall during the storm.

Lingering weather issues have canceled classes for Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 schools and the district#146;s board of education meeting on Thursday, Feb. 3.
