Lombard fights icy roads, continues plowing
Lombard roads are about 95 percent accessible, authorities said Thursday afternoon, but icy conditions caused several minor fender benders.
Ice on Finley Road on the village’s west side near Interstate 355 seemed to be causing motorists the most trouble, police Chief Ray Byrne said.
“The road condition is pretty slippery,” Byrne said. “The sun is helping a little bit, but it’s just going to be slow.”
Public works crews Thursday and Friday will continue addressing road conditions by plowing cul-de-sacs, pushing snow closer to curbs and removing it from the center of some roads, public works director Carl Goldsmith said.
All cul-de-sacs south of Roosevelt Road were plowed by early Thursday afternoon, Goldsmith said, and crews now are working to clear turnarounds north of Roosevelt.
“We’re in the mode where we’re curbing and pushing back corners,” Goldsmith said. “That will continue to (Friday).”
Then, crews will use a large snowblower to collect snow from the center of roads such as South Main Street and Westmore-Meyers Road that do not have parkways, he said. That operation will take two days.
