LFCD, Lake Bluff Middle take top prizes

Submitted by Angela M. Reiter

The Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Mathematics Department hosted a Mathalon for middle school girls recently on the Woodlands Academy campus.

The Mathalon, part of Celebrating Women in Science, the school’s yearlong focus commemorating its new Science Center, challenged students to build skyscrapers from paper, utilize estimation skills, and recreate distance vs. time graphs using CBR motion detectors in conjunction with graphing calculators.

Awards were given to the top three finishers at the event’s conclusion. Lake Forest Country Day School took First Place, Saints Faith, Hope & Charity of Winnetka earned Second Place, and Lake Bluff Middle School came in Third.

Woodlands hosted this event to encourage young girls to pursue studies in Mathematics. The opportunity also gave students the chance to compete against groups of their peers.
