Blizzard burglary in West Dundee

The blizzard’s crippling effect on the area this week likely prompted someone to burglarize the Target in West Dundee, police said Thursday.

While the snow fell between 8:15 p.m. Tuesday and 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, someone shattered the store’s front glass doors, walked into the store and made off with an unknown number of iPods and iPads, said Kevin Burke, supervisor of administrative services for the West Dundee Police Department.

The store at 999 W. Main St., is normally open until 10 p.m. on Tuesdays but closed early because of the snow.

Police were dispatched to the store at 4:39 a.m., Wednesday after one of the store’s managers discovered the burglary, Burke said. Employees were restocking the store at that time and it was not open for business.

The burglary is particularly disturbing when stories of people helping people survive the storm have dominated the area.

“For every two heroes, you probably have somebody that’s looking to do what they did here,” Burke said. “It’s unfortunate.”

Police have no leads in the case and don’t know how many people were involved. While there are security cameras positioned in and around the store, there is no information yet on what they actually captured.

If you have any information about the case, police ask that you call the anonymous crime hotline at (847) 586-5600 or that you send an e-mail to stopcrime@wdundee.org.
