City provides snow removal tips
As the city continues its snow removal efforts, it offers several winter weather tips to minimize any risks to residents' safety and comfort levels. As city employees work in extreme weather conditions, the city would like to ask residents and business owners to assist in snow removal efforts if possible.
The city asks residents to assist the fire department by clearing snow from fire hydrants when clearing snow from their walkways. During an active fire, it can be difficult for fire fighters to locate a snow covered hydrant, and it could take several minutes for firefighters to clear the snow so it can be used. Please clear the ice and snow from aroundthe hydrant and shovel a path to the street. Fire fighters need a 4 foot circle around the hydrant to be able to operate it properly.
Those residents that have high-efficiency furnaces should clear snow away from the outside exhaust vent pipe. If this pipe gets clogged, a furnace has a high risk of shutting down, and in these current weather conditions, locating a repairman may take several hours.
Residents are asked to clear the snow away from gas meters. Removing the snow from around the gas meter will prevent the potential for gas leaks.
“Once again, we thank our residents in advance for their patience and support as we continue our efforts to remove snow and clear the streets as quickly and safely as possible,” said Community Relations Manager Nadja Lalvani. “Once again, we do ask that motorists stay off of the streets as much as possible for their own safety.”
Periodic updates will be provided on the city's website www.naperville.il.us. Information will also be provided through the city's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NapervilleIL and the city's Twitter account at http://twitter.com/NapervilleIL.
