Staying put pays off in S. Elgin
There wasn’t much to see in South Elgin, authorities said.
The South Elgin Fire Protection District has not fielded a single snow-related phone call since the storm started Tuesday afternoon, said Assistant Fire Chief Bill Sohn.
No accidents have been reported in the village and there were no known power outages, said Deputy Police Chief Jerry Krewczyk.
A majority of phone calls to the police department came from motorists all over the town who got stuck in the snow.
He did not have an exact figure on the number of vehicles involved, but Krewczyk said police and tow trucks had gotten most of them out.
“Unless you have a four-wheel drive, I’d probably caution (residents) to stay home,” he said.
All of the roads remained open throughout the blizzard and public works employees are keeping the main roads clear.
They include Spring Street, State Street, Sundown Road, Lancaster Circle and parts of McLean Boulevard, Krewczyk said.
Sohn says the lack of activity came as a result of residents staying put.
“I guess everybody looked outside and said, ‘It wasn’t my cup of tea today,’” Sohn said.
