40 stranded on Carol Stream road

Roughly 40 people had to be rescued from their vehicles stuck in the snow Tuesday night and Wednesday morning on Gary Avenue in Carol Stream, authorities said.

Police Chief Kevin Orr said the blowing snow caused major traffic tie-ups along Gary, leading to the rescues from about 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Motorists were transported to their houses or to warming centers, while their vehicles were towed.

Orr noted there weren’t any major accidents Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, main streets like Gary were in better condition than they were the night before, while plow crews continued to target side streets that were “still fairly impassible,” Orr said.

“It’s going to take a little time with the winds dying down to catch up with plowing,” he said.
