Illinois tollway gets $5 million in back tolls
Illinois tollway officials say they've collected nearly $5 million from Indiana drivers who didn't pay tolls or fines for nearly two years.
The Hoosier motorists got a break on collections while the tollway's violation notice system was inadvertently turned off.
The Chicago Tribune reports that toll officials originally estimated that Indiana drivers owed $7 million. But tollway board member Bill Morris says the agency is OK with the $5 million received because it is more than they thought they'd get.
The tollway sent out 85,000 past-due bills in Indiana in August. The bills involved missed tolls and fines dating to May 2008.
