CTA considers closing "el" stops

CHICAGO — The Chicago Transit Authority, which wants to renovate its aging rapid transit lines in far northern Chicago and suburban Evanston, says it is considering the possible elimination of two stops in Evanston and as many as three in Chicago.

The possible changes on the CTA's Red and Purple lines were the subject of a public meeting Thursday evening in Evanston.

CTA officials tell the Chicago Tribune they have developed six potential options for repairing stations and track systems on about 9.5 miles of the Red and Purple lines.

Several of the plans would call for closing Evanston's Foster Street and South Boulevard. Some of the plans also call for the closing of the Thorndale and Jarvis stops in Chicago, and possibly the Lawrence Avenue station as well.
