Bond denied in sawed-off shotgun slaying

CHICAGO — Chicago authorities were holding a Maywood man without bond in the shotgun slaying of his former girlfriend's nephew.

Circuit Court Judge Donald Panarese Jr. denied bond Thursday for 24-year-old Diontae Calhoun despite the contention by Calhoun's attorney, Gayle Schor, that her client was acting in self-defense when he shot 21-year-old Eric Lenell Thompson.

Prosecutors say Calhoun crashed a family gathering Jan. 10 at the Chicago apartment of his former girlfriend, who is the mother of one of his children, and the two quarreled. They say Calhoun was told to leave, but he later returned to the building, carrying a sawed-off shotgun.

According to police, when Thompson confronted him in the hallway, Calhoun shot him in the head with the shotgun from point-blank range.
