Shurna’s status uncertain for Ohio State game
John Shurna’s status for Saturday’s home game against No. 1 Ohio State is uncertain after suffering a concussion Wednesday night at Minnesota.
Shurna’s injury occurred with 3:07 left in the first half after the Gophers’ Ralph Sampson nudged him face-first into the basket stanchion.
Shurna was trying to complete a fastbreak layup on the play but was knocked off balance after he released the shot. No foul was called.
The Wildcats’ leading scorer returned with 17:42 to play with a large bandage protecting his stitched-up chin.
According to NU spokesman Nick Brilowski, Shurna didn’t complain of any concussion-like symptoms until after the game.
“He saw a doctor (Thursday) morning and he’ll get checked out again (Friday),” Brilowski said in an e-mail. “(He’s) day to day at this point.”
Shurna produced 11 points,7 rebounds and 2 blocks in the first half but just 5 points and 1 rebound after his injury.
“I thought he played differently (after the injury), that’s for sure,” NU coach Bill Carmody said in a postgame interview with WGN 720-AM.
