Why ship Rusty the dog out of state?

Regarding the article about Rusty the stray dog, I was wondering why all of the good people who fed and cared for him, none were willing to adopt or find a home for him — instead, they set up a trust fund to home him driven to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah.

I am a supporter of Best Friends since I found out they rescued the Vick dogs and healed their physical and emotional scars. They are now ready for adoption. I am well aware of the wonderful work they do there for all animals, but why ship the dog all the way when a suitable home could have been found in our local area? Just wondering.
