Elk Grove Village plans infrastructure improvements

Elk Grove Village residents will see more street and infrastructure improvements this year paid for by federal grants, Mayor Craig Johnson said Tuesday.

The village was issued $13 million in Build America Bonds with which it completed $4 million worth of improvements to roads, water mains and sanitary sewers throughout the village last year.

Last year, the village resurfaced and reconstructed roughly seven miles of streets at a cost of $2.9 million. It plans to resurface and rebuild roughly 14 miles of streets for $4.3 million this year in residential and industrial areas.

“Over the past year, there has been millions of dollars invested back into this community through the Build America Bonds, through the grants we got from the federal government,” Johnson said. “We’re getting most of these projects for almost 40 to 50 cents on the dollar. We’re saving the taxpayers of this community millions and millions of dollars. If you can do it, this is the time to make improvements in a community.”

In all, the village has received roughly $20 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants, transportation grants and Build America Bonds, Village Manager Ray Rummel said.

Intersection and infrastructure improvements are planned for key locations in the village’s business park — Route 83 and Greenleaf, $4.1 million; Route 83 and Pratt Boulevard, $3.7 million — funded through the Federal Surface Transportation Grant Program.

The village also will be reconstructing a high-capacity water main along Greenleaf Avenue from Route 83 to Elmhurst Road, the business park water main along Scott Street from Route 72 to Lee Street, and improve the I-290 and Biesterfield Road interchange, funded through the transportation grant and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.

Concert series will resume July 5

Elk Grove Village’s summer concert series will return this year with four bands highlighting music from the 1960s through the ’90s.

Mayor CraigJohnson said this year’s four-week summer concert series, held every Tuesday in July, will be organized in partnership with the Elk Grove Park District.

The village will pay $40,000 toward the cost of putting on the free community event, while the park district will fund the remaining $30,000.

The Lovin’ Spoonful will kick off the “Unity Within the Community” series on July 5. The Chicago Gold Revue takes the stage July 12.

Hotel California “A Salute to the Eagles” will perform July 19. The series wraps up with Monkees’ lead singer Micky Dolenz performing July 26.

Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. on the Village Green located between village hall and Elk Grove Public Library.

“We hope it is a bigger and better event,” Park District President Tom Cook said.

Johnson chimed in, “It’s family entertainment.”
