Gas, water main leaks tie traffic on McLean in Elgin
McLean Boulevard near Kimball Middle School in Elgin was reduced to two lanes early Monday due to gas and water main leaks, officials said.
The break was between Lawrence Avenue and Demmond Street, said Colby Basham, utility supervisor for the Elgin public works department.
He said a 12-inch water main cracked at about 10 p.m. Sunday, prompting a late night emergency repair.
However, while crews were digging up the water pipe, they clipped a small, underground gas line at about 1 a.m.
Work on the water main was put on hold until the gas line could be repaired, Basham said.
Nicor officials repaired the gas line at about 7 a.m., and crews went back to repairing the water main.
A section of road was closed completely overnight until the gas line was repaired, officials said. However, two lanes of the four lane road were reopened after the gas line repair was made.
