Lombard/Yorktown Race for the Cure deemed successful

“Lombard can be proud of the participation and the funds raised for this worthy cause,” said Lombard Village President William Mueller. “The success of this event will no doubt carry on for the future,” he added.

Mueller is referring to the Susan G. Komen Lombard Race for the Cure, the first suburban Komen race ever to be held in Lombard last fall.

The race, which raised $272, 512, had a total of 2,626 participants, with 109 of them coming from out of state, making Lombard a destination race. “Seventy-five percent of all funds raised for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Chicago stay in the local community to fund education, screening and treatment programs,” said Michael Ziener, Executive Director of Komen Chicago.

“The remaining 25 percent go to our national organization to fund research programs to find the cures, he added.

More than 1,100 people who participated in the race were from DuPage County, with the second highest county participation rate being Cook County, with 790 people.

“We are thrilled with the turnout for the first race in Lombard,” said Ziener. “Thank you so much to the community for making it such a great success!”

Next year's Lombard's Race for the Cure will be held on Sept. 25, 2011.
