Waiting for jail guard memorial
I am pleased Oak Brook Village President John Craig knows what it’s like to struggle as a jail guard on his way to a much-needed retirement pension. I do take umbrage that Mr. Craig feels he and his wife are the only ones who have ever worked hard in life, and for that reason are deserving of a pension or pensions.
During a recent board meeting, in a shot aimed squarely at village employees — including firefighters and police officers — Craig scolded, “Don’t tell me or anyone what a terrible workload you have in Oak Brook and how dangerous it is.” Fighting fire isn’t dangerous? In 2001, Oak Brook firefighters were almost killed in a building collapse on Heritage Oaks, and I doubt seriously if bad people and guns immediately stop at Oak Brook’s border.
President Craig is out of touch with his comments — his hypocrisy is thick. I visited the firefighter memorial in Springfield which identifies firefighters killed in action; new names are added to that hallowed site regularly. I am waiting for the construction of a jail guard memorial, but I can’t imagine I’ll see one anytime soon.
