No injuries in Bartlett townhouse fire

Two cars inside a Bartlett townhouse garage went up in flames Sunday afternoon during a fire that caused an estimated $265,000 in damages, according to fire officials.

Firefighters responded to the four-unit townhouse complex on the 1600 block of Chelmsford Court at 3:35 p.m. Sunday and found the garage under one unit fully involved in fire, said Bartlett Fire District Lt. Brian Corn.

A newer-model Lexus and a Chevrolet Cobalt valued together at an estimated $75,000 were destroyed in the fire, Corn said.

The two vehicles added fuel to the fire, which spread to two bedrooms above the garage and caused smoke damage to the adjacent units on either side of the affected unit.

“Cars burn really hot because they have a lot of plastics that burn at a higher temperature,” Corn said.

The townhouse was left uninhabitable after the fire, which was brought under control at 4:35 p.m., according to the Bartlett Fire District.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation late Sunday.

The Bartlett Fire District was assisted by the Carol Stream and Pingree Grove fire districts and Hanover Park, Roselle and Streamwood fire departments.

No one was injured during the fire.
