How to address real issue in shootings?

The recent shooting in Tucson was not about politics, or about talk show hosts, or about Sarah Palin, or even about gun control. It was about mental illness.

What are we as a country doing to address this issue? What can we do that we are not currently doing to prevent similar episodes in the future?
