Man hurt when car strikes train in South Elgin
A train struck a car near the intersection of State and Woodbury streets in South Elgin Friday afternoon, authorities said.
Initial reports indicate the driver of the car was turning left from Woodbury onto State and headed west to the nearby tracks, when the northbound single engine locomotive was coming through the crossing at 2:47 p.m., according to South Elgin police.
The driver, a 19-year-old male, had to be extracated from the vehicle, and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with non-life threatening injuries, according to South Elgin Fire Lt. Todd Erickson.
The vehicle, a four-door small compact car, was totaled, Erickson said.
The intersection of State and Woodbury was closed for about two hours Friday afternoon during the accident invesitgation.
