Theater company from Belarus to visit Chicago

A theater company from Belarus whose members have been subject to arrest and harassment by the government of that former Soviet republic have been invited to perform in Chicago.

The Goodman Theatre will host a monthlong series of performances by the politically outspoken Belarus Free Theatre in February. The company just finished performing "Being Harold Pinter" at the Under the Radar festival in New York.

The fate of the actors has concerned the American theater community since members of the troupe say they've been harassed after protesting the Dec. 19 re-election of Belarus' president.

The Goodman Theatre calls the group's work "both essential and powerful." Visiting Chicago may help buy time for its artists, who could face serious risks if they return home now.
